As we talked about last week, I like to think of your website as your virtual home. And like your real home, it should welcome your visitors like guests. Making sure your visitors know:
- What the house rules are
- What your intentions are
- What juicy details of their lives you are going to remember the next day
Here in Part II of this video, we are going to tackle disclosing your intentions and letting them know what juicy details you know. In Part I, we focused on establishing house rules.
(A big thanks to ArtLicensingInfo.com and Citizen Workshops for letting me use their websites.)
Affiliate/Sponsor Disclaimers
How do you make your intentions clear? You make your intentions clear by letting visitors know if you are getting paid for the content on your site. And clearly identifying what that content and payment are.
I like to think of this as the PACT you make with your visitors. This pact is that you promise to place a disclaimer in a way that doesn’t require action, is clear, and to use it every time.
Privacy Policy
As website owners, we are privy to lots of information about our visitors. Google Analytics tracks what size monitors people are using, the operating system and location. MailChimp lets you know exactly who opened and clicked your emails.
So our privacy policy is designed to make it transparent to our visitors what we know about them, how we use it, and what we share with others.
There are lots of areas you should think about when drafting a privacy policy, I’ve laid them out here. And once again, it doesn’t have to be long or full of legalese to be valid.
